Law is part of the Social Sciences faculty, working alongside Psychology and Sociology. The department aims to give students an understanding of the institutions and procedures of the legal system and of general concepts of liability. As law is a dynamic and constantly evolving
subject, students have the opportunity to discuss topics in the context of contemporary news stories and to engage in topical debate.
Aims
The skills developed through the study of law are of general application and will prove useful in a range of other subjects and future careers. The syllabus aims to:
- encourage students to become critical thinkers, assessing and evaluating the material presented;
- enable students to develop the skills to present logical and coherent arguments using a range of supporting material and case law;
- develop problem solving skills through the application of legal rules; and
- prepare students for the challenges of the external AS examination and to provide a sound foundation where students want to study law to A2.
Accommodation and resources
Law is based in the sixth form centre. Students have lessons in classrooms with interactive whiteboards which encourage a variety of teaching methods including powerpoint presentations, use of internet resources and illustration through contemporary news stories and debates.
Key Stage 5
At AS Level we offer the AQA Law syllabus. In Unit 1 students study the institutions and processes of law making and the legal system. In Unit 2 they cover principles of liability and the procedures of the court system in civil and criminal law.
Extra-curricular activities
The Law department has led a Law ‘masterclass’ to gifted and talented students in Key Stage 4 to provide an engaging introduction to this new subject and to stretch their thinking skills. Further masterclasses are planned for the coming year.
